The Western World or the Occident, western Eurasia (Europe), as opposed to the Eastern World (the Orient), eastern Eurasia (Asia), is made up of the countries of Western Eurasia, (Europe), as well as the technologically advanced countries of the Americas that have been influenced (by colonisation or influenced) tremendously by the France, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom or other European nations.
Parts of Africa can be considered Western, but culturally speaking, they have been influenced more by Islam (North Africa) and native cultures, leaving South Africa as the only "western" nation in that continent.
The Islamic Terriost Group named ISIS threatened to attack the Western World far worse than 9/11. Appeasing ISIS is a bit like appeasing Hitler. If the west does nothing the threat is likely to grow.
Around the world, all Western nations are relatively similar in terms of language, most using the Latin alphabet. Greece and Cyprus are an exception with its own Greek alphabet Western nations have similar culture, traditions, religion (predominantly Western Christianity in most countries but also Atheism or no religion) and philosophies, and customs. The most cultural diversity in the West is in countries such as Italy, Germany.
Countries of the Occident
A list of the western nations
In the Americas: (The USA and Canada in North America are clearly western nations. The other nations in this list are in Latin America and aren't clearly western, they all have strong western sectors)
Controversy over the "capital"
The "capital" of the Occident could be looked at as being three possible choices:
- London, the historical capital (the capital of the British Empire and the Commonwealth of Nations)
- Washington DC (the capital of the United States and the Organization of American States)
- Vatican City, a tiny country landlocked in Italy, which is part of the Occident but is the religious capital for Roman Catholics.
In fact, the Western world has many capitals (important cities), such as Brussels (the capital of the EU), New York City (the capital of the United Nations), Mexico City (largest Spanish speaking city), Vienna among others.
