The government of Taiwan is currently dominated by the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party).
It's been in a feud with the PRC ever since the Chinese Civil War began, with both claiming to be the rightful rulers of the other. Some criticize the PRC for bullying a nation that small relative to them, but the US did that to pretty much all of Central America and to Hawaii (we full-on annexed the latter).
Up until the late '80s, it was a situation of "lesser of two evils", with both sides being brutally authoritarian and corrupt, and killing similar percentages of their respective populations. But after the democratization of Taiwan (a very similar event to South Korean democratization), in spite of the PRC's move from socialism to fiscal neoliberalism, social policies remained brutally repressive, and effectively moved from an elitist oligarchy to, well, an elitist oligarchy.
