Romania is a democratic country in the crossroads between Central Europe and the Balkan region of southern Europe. It is a member of the European Union and NATO.

History

Romania is an ancient European state. It was a totalitarian and oppressive regime under dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. The country is now Democratic though there was a long struggle to get to democracy. It was the only country of the revolutions of 1989 where the change of regime turned violent.

With a population of 22 million Romania is rather a significant player in Europe. There is a serious problem with corruption in Romania which delayed Romania’s effort to join the European Union, though Romania is now its member. [1] [2] The Romanian economy went into decline during the 1990s but has now recovered and is developing rapidly.
