The Netherlands
is a democratic country in western Europe bordering Germany and Belgium. The Netherlands is often erroneously called Holland, after the historically most prominent part of the country. The sea is kept out with massive dams called dykes and water is pumped out continuously. Some pumps are wind powered. Those are the famous Dutch windmills.

The people who live in the Netherlands are called the Dutch. The Dutch people speak a Germanic language. They tend to be politically and culturally liberal. It is one of the most atheist countries in the world.

Cannabis is tolerated in The Netherlands. [1] Gay marriage is legal as well.

The Netherlands is one of the ten happiest nations in the world.
