Maryland was the seventh state to ratify the Constitution of the United States. Maryland is bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, West Virginia to the west, Virginia to the south and Delaware to the east. Maryland's primary geographical feature is the Chesapeake Bay, which almost completely separates the eastern shore from the rest of Maryland. Maryland's capital is not Baltimore, but rather Annapolis.
Maryland is considered a Blue State, and this can be attributed to the fact that an overwhelming majority of the population living in the DC-Baltimore corridor votes Democrat. As a blue state, Maryland does have flashes of progressive brilliance, but these occur too infrequently. This is partially because the population living outside of the DC-Baltimore corridor (i.e., the eastern shore, southern Maryland and western Maryland) tends to vote Republican.
The Roman Catholic Church is the largest single Christian denomination in Maryland as the state was originally set up to give a refuge for British Catholics. Maryland is one of the original 13 colonies that broke away from Great Britain and signed the Declaration of Independence.
Maryland has legalized gay marriage, making Maryland the first state south of the Mason-Dixon line to allow same-sex marriage. It's easily the most liberal southern state, even boasting the distinction of having the highest percentage of Democrats out of any state.
