The Commonwealth the Commonwealth of Nations or British Commonwealth is an international organisation consisting mainly of former British colonies. Commonwealth members must be democratic. Undemocratic member countries are suspended from the Commonwealth and cannot rejoin till the rest of the Commonwealth is satisfied their government is better. Supporters say the British Commonwealth is a force for democracy. Critics say it is old fashioned and a reminder of former British Colonialism. Unlike the Commonwealth the British Empire was undemocratic.

Some Commonwealth countries recognise the British Queen as their Constitutional Monarch (like Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia) but other Commonwealth nations are republics.

The Commonwealth creates links between nations in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, in Europe, Asia, India, Africa, North America (Canada), Latin America, Oceania. There are Commonwealth nations in all inhabited Continents.
