A secular nation keeps religion out of the government ie practises separation of church and state.
The Federal government of United States is a secular state by law, as mandated in its Constitution. This is notable because the United States was among the first nations in the world to legally disestablish the connection between government and religion. Some Fundamentalist Christians of the Religious Right frequently do everything in their power to override the Constitutional separation and to make Christianity into the state religion, but have thus-far failed to do so, and the United States remains a secular state, by law and at least part of the time in practice.
